My name is Mateja Verlic Bruncic and I scale teams, systems, and strategy.
I'm an engineering and operations leader who helps organizations grow through clarity, accountability, and data-driven systems. My work connects business strategy with execution by aligning people, processes, and metrics to create sustainable performance.
I lead with a systems mindset: designing structures that enable focus, empower teams, and turn complexity into measurable results.
I believe in clarity, accountability, and empowerment. Great systems don't replace people — they enable them to do their best work.
I build organizations that connect strategy, systems, and people.
Over my career, I've led teams across product, engineering, and operations by driving growth, clarity, and transformation through every stage of company building.
I began as a Product Manager leading a small full-stack team in a startup, working side-by-side with sales and support to bring ideas to market quickly.
That experience taught me how to balance customer insight, technical constraints, and business outcomes, and it shaped my pragmatic approach to leadership.
In my next role at a 20-person startup bootstrapping as a software agency, I led design sprint workshops with international clients, managed cross-functional teams of designers and engineers, and guided projects from the first client meeting to successful launch.
One of my most impactful projects was renewing the mobile and web banking experience for the second-largest national bank. This partnership — the first of its kind between a traditional bank and a startup, pushed digital innovation inside a highly regulated environment.
I worked directly with the bank's Director of Digital and Director of Engineering, shaping both product direction and delivery execution.
As COO, I oversaw operations across all projects, aligning execution with business strategy. I led hiring, refined internal processes, negotiated contracts, and represented the company in client meetings, ensuring that growth remained sustainable and human-centered.
Later, I joined a growth-stage company in the genetics domain as Director of IT, where I built and led a 20+ person engineering organization and managed collaborations with external partners.
I established a new office, oversaw IT infrastructure, and coordinated cross-department initiatives with sales, marketing, product, and operations.
This period sharpened my ability to bridge strategic priorities with technical execution, and to build systems that scale responsibly.
Today, as Senior Director of Engineering and Operations at Databox, I operate at the intersection of strategy, execution, and change management.

I'm:
I'm called "the glue": connecting teams, bridging functions, and keeping the system moving through change.
My role combines strategic leadership with hands-on execution, helping the company evolve its structure, culture, and operating rhythm for the next phase of growth.
I’ve learned that progress doesn’t always begin with permission. In organizations shaped by legacy habits and comfort with chaos, I focus on earning trust through clarity and results. Rather than pushing process for its own sake, I show how structure accelerates outcomes and strengthens accountability. Change happens when people experience less friction, not more rules.
My role is to translate vision into working systems by introducing the rhythm, focus, and transparency that help teams move faster even when leadership or culture isn’t fully ready. That’s how transformation begins: quietly, consistently, through proof that better ways of working simply work.
I'm a strategic operator with roots in product and engineering. I bring structure and focus to organizations in transition, helping teams align on what matters most — even when the path forward isn't yet clear.
I speak on the intersection of leadership, technology, and empowerment — exploring how clarity, empathy, and structure drive innovation and sustainable growth.
With experience leading teams across product, engineering, and operations, I bring a pragmatic, people-first perspective to how organizations scale. My talks combine real-world lessons with frameworks for building alignment, accountability, and trust in fast-changing environments.
I contribute to conversations that challenge how we build, lead, and grow — where clarity, empathy, and innovation intersect.

Cross-functional leadership at the intersection of strategy, execution, and change management
Built and led 20+ person engineering organization, established office, managed IT infrastructure
Led design sprints, managed cross-functional teams, oversaw operations and client partnerships
Led full-stack team, balanced customer insight with technical constraints and business outcomes
I believe in giving back — sharing experience, time, and perspective to help others grow and strengthen the tech community.
I'm an active contributor to local and regional tech ecosystems through mentoring, organizing, and speaking. This year, I served as a co-organizer of DevOpsDays Ljubljana, helping bring together engineers, leaders, and practitioners to share knowledge and build stronger connections across disciplines.
In the past, I also helped organize WebCamp conferences, supporting inclusive, community-driven events for developers and tech professionals.
Beyond conferences, I mentor at workshops and hackathons, guiding participants on teamwork, leadership, and real-world problem-solving.
Giving back isn't a side project — it's part of how I lead. Empowering others to learn, collaborate, and grow makes the entire ecosystem stronger.
I'm passionate about building organizations that execute with clarity, empathy, and discipline.
